and all I could do was scream

and all I could do was scream
they went off into the bush
chasing some critter
cornering something in the fen
barking
and all I could do was scream
at the top of my lungs
as time and time went running
karma biting
and all I could do
was holler screeching
and of course they’d never come
away from a fresh scent
to a call
so I ventured in
towards the swamp
saw them hounding
something at the edge of the water
but all I could do was yell
too long and too loud
karma will cream us
I went in through the brush
to the bog
thick sludgy mud
where now Lucky had most
of the muskrat’s head in his mouth
while the beagle worried it’s ass
doing their best
to maimed and
and they’ll kill it promptly
God willing
so for a while I didn’t scream
Lucky shock the critter now and then
but it wasn’t dead
and hardly seemed like dying
so I screamed
and pulled the dogs off
clumsily
they broke to harry the beast again
but I’d scream them away
from getting fully engaged
and it seemed alive
it on its round back
in the mud
looking at me
one eyed
the other muddied and
who knows
blind
I pulled the dogs off
covered in mud
and left the muskrat
to its painful fate
painful dying
or painful living
cause all I could do
was scream
